Sydney-Singapore

Sydney to Singapore 4 July, 2011.

Our next door neighbour Jak dropped us off at Lisarow Stn for the train trip to Sydney International Airport, amazing the train that took us from Central Station to the International gateway of Australia was a graffiti stained, rubbish filled stinking carriage. Something we have grown used to, but I dread what must be going through the minds of international visitors.  Our first flight is with Singapore Airlines on the A380. I had flown on the A380 with Qantas on their lower deck. This time we secured seats upstairs, not with the silver tongues, but at the back end they had a space for cattle class.

Hilde getting settled in Cattle Class.
Although on Singapore airlines cattle class is pretty good, many extras that you don't see on Qantas and the leg room is fantastic. We were well settled in our seats, the safety video was shown and all phones were turned off. As the A380 taxied towards takeoff, somebodies phone started to ring, the culprit was two seats ahead of me and the stewardess who was seated between us started to get up and deal with it when it stopped.  A few moments later it rang again and soon after stopped. On the third occasion it rang, I could see other passengers telling the culprit to turn it off, the stewardess tried to take possession of the phone. A princess of a young lady sitting in front of me called out, 'rip the bloody battery out' .  At this moment the phones loudspeaker broadcast a male voice saying ''hello, hello''. The stewardess killed it and we all returned to normal.  That person would be as described by a good friend, Tim Oliver, as a 'train person'
I made the mistake of ordering a Singapore Sling, a drink promoted by the airline, I told the steward that I really liked it. Without prompting he kept bringing them and at the 4th I had to say, 'No more please.'
Each seat was well equipped with a large screen and numerous channels, note on the pic the USB and other ports, you can hook up just about anything and do your thing ie edit pics on your digital camera.

Singapore customs and immigration was a breeze, a taxi took us straight to Lyn and Thor's home at Woodlands, a good half hour drive, they were surprised as we were at their door an hour from touchdown.  They live on the penthouse floor of an apartment complex, four bedrooms, our bathrooms although one o each is for the maid which they have declined. Talking about maids there was a problem with a nearby apartment complex aqua maid, water is supplied via a roof storage tank and people complained that is was becoming frothy, just like a cup of cappichino. The service people were called and found a maid resident in the water tank, it appears that she had been there for a few months, he former employer a Bangladeshi was charged with her murder and the Aqua maid stopped serving frothy water. I hope I haven't offended anybody with that story, I know it is in bad taste..oops did it again.
Flying into Singapore with Singapore airlines has it's advantages, we produced our boarding cards and received half price on the hop on hop off tours, also a ride on the big wheel and the Singapore Museum.  My most favourite thing other than the food at the food halls and the hawkers markets is visiting and seeing all the things that I had seen on monster constructions a TV program. We had a great three nights at Lyn and Thor's but had to make space or the next load of visitors. We headed to the airport for our next leg, a Silkair flight to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
